Imagine, doctors taking out a piece of artificial skin stored in the refrigerator and curing patients with skin damage. Well, this fantasy may soon be a reality, for Chinese scientists have come up with artificial skin that may be very beneficial for patients in need of a skin transplant.
Jin Yan, a professor at the Fourth Military Medical University, unveiled such a kind of artificial skin at an exhibition on Monday. The experts showed people the milky white adhesive film, with a diameter of 20 centimetres, contained within a cultivation dish.
Before this, the US was the only country to have the technology to produce artificial skin to assist burn victims. According to the China Daily, Professor Jin Yan told Xi'an Evening Post that the artificial skin has two layers, the epidermis and dermis, with active cells, which can grow quickly along with the original human skin without the immune system rejecting it. China's State Food and Drug Administration is said to have ratified certificates for the development of the new artificial skin.
Over 15 million people are afflicted with burnt skin and ulcers every year in China, with an estimated 3.5 million people already needing a skin transplant, Professor Jin Yan has revealed.
A self-repairing plastic "skin" has been developed and tested by scientists.
The smart type of plastic, which automatically knits together when cracked or broken, The material contains microcapsules filled with a special healing agent. Like human skin, it bleeds and heals itself, offering a potential breakthrough in vital materials used in surgical implants. It could also prove useful for making rocket and spacecraft components, which cannot be repaired once they are in use Plastics are normally susceptible to cracking caused by vibration, bending, and heat.
